About the Artists
Bear Limvere
The objective, and challenge, of Bear's artistry is to discover
and reveal the beauty and essence of wood. His technique and sense
of form is continuously honed to best expose the beauty and spirit
of the tree. Incorporating features such as natural edges, bark,
and voids in a sensually pleasing form is one way of honoring the
infinite variety that nature creates. The lathe allows Bear to
combine lush forms with stunning natural materials.
Bear draws inspiration for his turnings from many sources. He is
influenced by Native American pottery of the Southwest, Classical
and Oriental forms, and the wood itself.
Bear has been working with wood for as long as he can remember. He
studied cabinet-making with an elderly carpintero, who taught
Bear to talk to his woods, asking if they wanted to be part of the
project.
In addition to creating full-size artistic and functional
pieces, Bear is a noted miniaturist, creating scaled miniature pieces
for collectors.
Bear also does Victorian-style Ornamental Turning. The picture at
the right is of Bear demonstrating Ornamental Turning at the Rocky
Mountain Woodturning Symposium in 2003. Bear has developed methods
of doing complex OT work on a standard lathe.
